W.R. TORRES FOUNDATION FOR THE BLIND

A Trinidad-based non-governmental organisation founded in 1998, the W. R. Torres Foundation for the Blind, has gained the respect of the international community for its work in assisting persons who are blind, deaf or mobility impaired avail themselves of the same educational and vocational opportunities available to persons without disabilities. Most recently, the Foundation - partnering with ILLUMINATt - played a major role in assisting the National Library and Information Systems Authority (NALIS) of Trinidad and Tobago equip its state-of-the-art, seven-story library complex with Freedom Scientific Products. Such assistive technology allows persons with sight, hearing and mobility disabilities to utilise the Library's full offerings including its extensive reading catalogue, multi-media facilities and the Internet.

The success of the project has caught the attention of multi-billion dollar technology solutions provider Hewlatt-Packard which has expressed interest in partnering with the Torres Foundation on future projects. The governments of Barbados, Suriname and some Latin American countries have also shown interest in following the NALIS project example.
